67-Year-Old Man Dies After Explosion at Massachusetts Home

Authorities say a contractor who was critically injured in an explosion at a Massachusetts home has died.

Roger Charpentier, a Brookfield plumber, was installing a new propane-fueled furnace at the New Braintree home last Wednesday when the explosion happened. Investigators believed it was caused by leaking propane that was ignited by the hot water heater pilot light.

Police say the explosion lifted the house six to 12 inches off its foundation.

The Telegram & Gazette reports the 67-year-old man apparently tried to put out the fire in the basement before fleeing the home. Police say he was found in the swimming pool with serious burns.

He was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he later died.
