Facility Facing Possible Charges After Autistic Man Found Alone, Jogging Near I-93

The case of the missing non-verbal autistic man found jogging along Interstate 93 Monday in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is now being viewed as a "potential crime," according to police.

David Maille was under the care of CLASS Inc. when he was found along the busy highway.

"People like this shouldn't be working with people for the disabled when other families put their trust into them," said David Maille, the father of the missing man who also shares the same name.

CLASS Inc. was responsible for driving Maille from his home in Billerica to their facility in Lawrence. The facility provides services to individuals with disabilities, according to their website.

According to the manager of a Dunkin' Donuts a half mile from the CLASS Inc. facility, Maille came into the restaurant before 8:30 a.m. He took a soda and left.

Billerica Police said Maille was reported missing six hours after he was found by the private facility where he lives, not CLASS Inc.

"I have no idea why it happened," said Maille's father. "I don't know if they were afraid. I don't know if they just plain don't care. I can't answer that question."

According to Maille's father, CLASS Inc. has not been able to say how his son was left alone.

"They confirmed through their video that David did not get off the bus," he said. "They also confirmed the drivers were not cooperating as to how David got off the bus because they made no stops. We know he didn't jump out of a window."

In an email Wednesday, a spokesperson from CLASS Inc. said they "don't have all the facts yet."

The Department of Developmental Services is reviewing CLASS Inc.'s policies and procedures.

The two employees responsible for driving Maille have been suspended.
