Debris Falls From Mass. Highway, Striking Cars Below

The debris, described as mostly cement and dust, fell from Interstate 93 onto vehicles travelling on the McGrath Highway in Somerville

State police say at least four cars were damaged when construction debris fell from a Massachusetts interstate highway overpass onto the vehicles below.

No one was injured.

The debris, described as mostly cement and dust, fell from Interstate 93 onto vehicles travelling on the McGrath Highway in Somerville just after midnight Thursday. At least one vehicle had a broken back window.

According to MassDOT, the cause was a street sweeper that moved rubber debris from a bridge expansion joint. The agency adds that a construction project in the area has worn the rubber parts of the expansion joints, and will be replacing them.

No roads were closed and the morning commute was not affected.
