Debris Falls From Overpass, Breaks Windshield

Woman said she was driving northbound on I-495 in Chelmsford, Mass. when piece of steel fell off Rte. 3A and hit her SUV

A family from Northboro, Massachusetts, was stranded along I-495 northbound when they should have been on the road, enjoying the start of a late-summer vacation.

Lisa Camara was with her son, Allen, in her Jeep while her mother and daughter were ahead of them in her mother's Ford Escape.

As her mother's vehicle traveled under the Route 3A overpass in Chelmsford, Camara saw something fall from the bridge, which MassDOT says was a piece of rusted steel.

The driver's 11-year-old granddaughter was sitting in the front passenger seat when the object dropped from the bridge, smashed into the window and shattered glass all throughout the inside of the vehicle.

Rylee Camara sustained minor cuts to her hands. The same is true for her grandmother, who didn't want to talk about what happened on camera.

MassDOT inspectors found flaking steel on other parts of the bridge that will now be removed.

Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, but this is not the way this family wanted to being their vacation.
