Hazardous Waste Dumped Near Conservation Land

Police say the 50-gallon barrels were discovered around 5:20 p.m. Saturday on a dirt access road off Lawrence Street

Authorities are searching for the person responsible for dumping at least nine barrels of hazardous material in a wooded area near conservation land in Pepperell, Massachusetts.

Police say the 50-gallon barrels were discovered around 5:20 p.m. Saturday on a dirt access road off Lawrence Street.

Chief David Scott says the barrels are believed to contain a combination of used motor oil and grease.

Members of the town's police and fire departments responded along with representatives from the Conservation Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.

EPA officials removed three inches of top soil from the area on Sunday. Officials do not believe the waste spread to nearby homes.

Scott says town conservation land was also not believed to have been damaged.
