U.S. Rep. William Keating has been tapped to serve as his party's ranking member on the House Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee.

The Cape Cod Democrat said his new duties on the subcommittee will dovetail with his ongoing work on the House Homeland Security Committee and his background as a former district attorney.

Keating said the subcommittee will focus in part on what he called a rise in transnational violence associated with foreign fighters training overseas and returning home - and the increased use of social media as a tool for terrorist recruitment.

Keating recently praised a new law proposed in the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that he said will help strengthen intelligence-sharing among federal, state and local law agencies.

Keating will continue to serve on the three other subcommittees.
