Massachusetts Expecting Smooth Health Care Sign-Up Period

Officials with the state's health care connector in Massachusetts are hoping the third time will be a charm when it comes to the open enrollment period for qualified insurance plans.

The connector's executive director, Louis Gutierrez, said Friday that a number of technical fixes and enhancements have been added to the website over the past year and he expects a smooth experience for most customers.

The open enrollment period begins on Sunday and runs through Jan. 31.

Technical failures marred the state's initial transition to the federal Affordable Care Act in 2013-2014. Things went better during last year's open enrollment period, but glitches continued.

Gov. Charlie Baker says the connector has been a "total crackup" for the last two years and the state has spent hundreds of millions of dollars fixing it.
