Public Hearing in Boston to Focus on Bills Related to Puppies, Kittens

Pet lovers and pet sellers are expected to gather on Beacon Hill for a public hearing on a number of animal welfare bills.

One bill would ban the sale of puppies and kittens under 8 weeks old. It would also give anyone who unknowingly buys a puppy or kitten with a health problem the opportunity to return the animal or seek reimbursement for veterinary fees associated with taking care of it.

Other bills would limit how long a dog can be kept tethered, protect abandoned animals found in vacant properties, strengthen the enforcement of dog laws and crack down on puppy mills.

The hearing before the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government is scheduled for Thursday at the Statehouse.
