Boston experienced a gridlock citywide as a result of snow removal operations Tuesday night, police confirm.
It's just the latest traffic woe for the city, after widespread MBTA issues caused massive delays during Tuesday morning's commute.
The Boston Police Department said it added extra officers at 4 p.m. in an effort to speed things along. Officers will help direct traffic on foot and patrol particularly congested areas. Some of the worst areas included downtown and Back Bay, in addition to Storrow and Memorial Drives.
Massachusetts State Police said Exit 24A to Government Center on Route 93 southbound was closed to surface traffic shortly before 5 p.m. The exit was reopened just after 8 p.m.
As a result of the delays, Massachusetts General Hospital asked their employees who could not leave on foot to remain at the hospital to alleviate congestion and ensure full staffing.
Police said travel in the city is taking two to three times as long as normal.
The intense snow removal efforts due to the 40-plus inch snowfall over the past week is reportedly to blame for the traffic delays.

Officials are hoping a snow melting unit will allow public works to melt some of the snow in order to create space to deposit snow now being cleared from city streets.
School is closed Tuesday in Boston, and some non-emergency state workers were told to come in late due to Monday's storm.
