Rhode Island Mayor Apologizes for Issues Detailed in State Police Report

Mayor Allan Fung has apologized to residents of Cranston, Rhode Island, following a scathing state police report accusing Fung of interfering with the city's police department amid his run for governor last year.

Fung on Wednesday acknowledged he had made mistakes, but he says he was misled by the city police department's leadership.

Fung says he didn't try to politicize a 2014 incident during which more than 100 citations were issued in the wards of two city councilors who voted against a police union contract. Fung requested that state police investigate the city police department following the incident.

Fung says he tried to reinstate Captain Stephen Antonucci, who investigators say orchestrated the ticketing blitz, to avoid costly litigation, not because Antonucci was a friend.

Fung, a Republican, lost to Raimondo in November.
