Woman Sentenced for Stealing $160K From Elderly Mom

The attorney general's office says 53-year-old Michaela Sprague was sentenced to serve two years, three months in home confinement and to repay the money

A Cranston, Rhode Island, woman has pleaded no contest to elder exploitation for taking more than $160,000 from her elderly mother.

The attorney general's office says 53-year-old Michaela Sprague was sentenced to serve two years, three months in home confinement and to repay the money.

Prosecutors say Sprague transferred $161,579.30 from her mother's bank account to herself from December 2010 until July 2013.

They say a financial adviser alerted other family members about the withdrawals, and Sprague promised to pay back the money. When she did not, the family alerted police.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says exploitation of the elderly is often not reported because victims are ashamed or do not want someone they love to get into trouble.
