Vermont officials say a toxic chemical found to have contaminated the water system of an upstate New York village has been found in five locations in North Bennington.

The contamination of the potentially cancer causing chemical known as PFOA was found in water from private wells for three homes in North Bennington, a business and the non-potable water supply for a waste water treatment plant.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin held a news conference Thursday to announce the findings, hours after receiving the test results that showed contamination.

Vermont officials aren't sure of the source of the contamination, but the water supply for the nearby New York Village of Hoosick Falls was found to be contaminated with the same chemical from a village factory that used PFOA in non-stick coatings.
