Gov. Peter Shumlin says he heard clearly in this fall's elections that Vermonters want more from him and more from the state.

Shumlin's comment in a prepared draft of his inaugural speech followed his election by the Legislature, which settled the race for governor after Shumlin won a plurality - but not a majority - in November.

Shumlin says he wants to devote his third two-year term to expanding the economy, reducing school spending while improving quality, promoting clean energy and cleaning up Vermont's lakes and streams.

Shumlin also vowed to continue working to control health care costs, while more than 100 supporters of the single-payer health care plan Shumlin abandoned last month chanted in the Statehouse corridors.
