A young Massachusetts woman is dead and eight other people were taken to hospitals after a crash Tuesday in Gilford, New Hampshire.

Police say a Toyota Tundra with New Hampshire plates was seen driving westbound erratically on Route 11 around 4 p.m. Minutes later, police received multiple 911 calls about a serious crash on the same route, where the Toyota had crossed the center line and hit a Nissan Murano carrying five Massachusetts residents head-on.

A 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Nissan was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Nissan's driver, a 20-year-old man, was taken to that hospital, as well, before being airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchock Medical Center. A 45-year-old woman who was in the back seat was taken straight to Laconia Airport, where a helicopter also picked her up and took her to Dartmouth-Hitchock. Neither of those patients' conditions was known to police.

A 1-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl were also in child seats in the Nissan. Both were taken to Lakes Region General Hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the Toyota, a 47-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to Lakes Region General Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not known.

Police say a woman and two boys, relatives of the family in the Nissan, were in a Honda Element that was riding behind it. The driver pulled over immediately after the crash. After she got out, police say the Honda rolled backward and crashed into a fence.

None of the people in the Honda were injured, but all were taken to Lakes Region General Hospital for evaluation. Police said it was not known if the driver had forgotten to put the vehicle in park as she ran out to help her family members.

Route 11 remained closed in the area Tuesday night. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
