5,000 Migrants Rescued in Mediterranean

Authorities rescued than 5,000 migrants from boats in distress in the Mediterranean since Friday amid some of the highest traffic yet in Europe's ongoing border crisis, Reuters reported. The bodies of another 17 migrants, along with 454 survivors, were brought ashore in Sicily as European Union border agents launched rescue efforts to save 500 more, authorities said Sunday. Frontex is coordinating an EU rescue mission in the Mediterranean known as Triton, which was stepped up after around 800 migrants drowned off Libya in April in the Mediterranean's most deadly shipwreck in living memory.
