Dominican Republic Faces Tourist Backlash After David Ortiz Shooting; 4 American Deaths

    Safe and peaceful is how the tourism minister of the Dominican Republic describes the tropical island. But after the shooting of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, the death of four Americans at popular resorts and another American who claims she was nearly beaten to death steps from her room, the picturesque getaway may be suffering from a crisis in confidence, according to NBC News.

    They talked to one couple who said they recently canceled a trip to the Dominican to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

    With the wave of Americans taking to social media after canceling trips, tourism officials are scrambling to assure travelers the island is safe. Officials say there's no threat to tourists.

    About 6.5 million tourists visited the island last year. Travel experts say the country is no more dangerous than it was before.
