Software billionaire Paul Allen says he's committed $100 million to create a new institute to study human cell biology, NBC News reported Monday. The Allen Institute for Cell Science is dedicated to studying induced pluripotent stem cells, which can develop into any number of specialized cells and theoretically hold potential for medical research. "Scientists have learned a great deal about many of the 50 trillion cells in our bodies over the last decades, but creating a comprehensive, predictive model of the cell will require a different approach," Allen said in a news release.
