A new initiative announced by First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday looks to get America's 58,000 homeless veterans off the streets by 2015, NBC News reported. "The Mayors' Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness" has been signed by 77 mayors, four governors and four county officials from across the country. “They don’t just have the capacity to reduce the problem, they are going to end it by the end of 2015," Mrs. Obama said of city and county officials, who she believes are best equipped to tackle the problem because "they know their communities inside out." In 2010, the Obama administration set a goal to end veteran homelessness by 2015.
