‘Great Atmosphere': Newbury Street Opened to Pedestrians

The annual event closed the busy road from Arlington Street to Massachusetts Avenue, allowing only pedestrians

Thousands of shoppers crowded Newbury Street on Sunday, wandering around and shopping without the worry of traffic.

The annual event, called Open Newbury Street, closed the busy road from Arlington Street to Massachusetts Avenue, allowing only pedestrians.

“It’s a great atmosphere,” said Ramon Cortes, who’s visiting from Atlanta. “Beautiful weather. Great people.”

Other people said the open street enhanced the shopping experience.

“The customer and the stores get more related, which is great,” said Maria Palacios of Cambridge. “We walk and the stores sell, so it’s a win-win.”

The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., also allowed businesses to set up tables near the street.

“There’s definitely more people; it definitely attracts a good crowd,” said Marissa Kearney, a sales associate at Charleston Shoe Co. “We sell so many shoes. We just came out with new boots, which are great for fall.”

There were three Open Newbury Street days scheduled this summer; the last one is slated for Sept. 15.

The city encourages shoppers to use public transportation, walk or bicycle to Newbury Street.
