Old timers use the phrase 'Montreal Express' to describe when cold air roars into New England during the winter.
A strong low-pressure system dropped more than 10 inches of snow in much of northern New England, especially the state of Maine where some communities are still without electricity Thursday morning. It was initially heavy, wet snow, but now things are much colder, and the snow, what there is left of it in the air, is of much less in density.
The gradient between the low pressure to our east and high pressure to the northwest is generating another windy day, with gusts past 35 mph. The wind will increase little this afternoon.
U.S. & World
We have a mixture of sun and clouds, but clouds are outnumbering sunny breaks, and there are scattered snow flurries. High temperatures in the 20s north, to the 30s south.
The mountains of Vermont continue to pick up a rather heavy snowfall Thursday.
Just about all the snow shifts down overnight Thursday. Under a waning crescent moon, it’s a cold one with the low temperature near 0 degrees far north to the teens and low 20s south.
Friday and Saturday both feature mostly sunny skies with less wind. High temperatures will be in the teens north and 20s south.
Later this weekend, all eyes are on a winter storm traversing the southern states. Snow developing in Oklahoma and Missouri will spread east to the Atlantic seaboard Saturday night and Sunday.
At the same time, there’s another front coming across Lake Superior headed towards Northern New England. These two combined events will result in clouds increasing Saturday afternoon. And the chance of at least a little bit of snow in spots off and on Sunday and into Monday.
It appears there will be two low-pressure systems passing south of New England, with the first one on Sunday and the second on Monday. The second one on Monday may get Cape Cod with a heavier burst of snow and wind.
Otherwise, it is just a fairly quiet wintry pattern, including for the Patriots game, with high temps in the 20s.
