One person was killed after being shot in East Boston late Sunday afternoon.
According to the Boston Police Department, the shooting happened in the Jeffries Point neighborhood, near the intersection of Orleans and Marginal streets.
The victim, described as an adult male, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The identity of the victim is not known at this time.
According to Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, police received a radio call of a person shot just before 5 p.m. on Sunday.
First responders found the victim suffering from gun shot wounds.
"We don't believe this to be random," said Commissioner Evans to the press, "we believe the parties involved here know each other."
Police are searching for a dark-colored Toyota Rav4 in connection to the shooting.
Investigators believe that the victim was shot inside of the car and then pushed out into the street, according to Evans.
"Something happened in that car," said Evans, "We're looking for the car and the occupants of that car."
The shooting happened down the road from a restaurant, which employees told NBC Boston was packed at the time of the shooting. Police told customers in the restaurant to get away from the windows during the investigation, employees said.
Police asked the restaurant's owners for security camera footage of the street during the time of the shooting.
The last two weeks have seen an uptick in Boston shootings, said Evans. "It seems like everybody has a gun out there," he said, "We've got to work hard to get those guns off the street."
The shooting was the first in East Boston in 2017, and with just three weeks left in the year, Evans expressed regrets that the borough wouldn't be able to claim that record into 2018. "I was hoping we wouldn't have one here this year," he said.
Police are asking for the public's help in identifying suspects and lending information which could lead to an arrest. Anyone with information relevant to the shooting is asked to call (617) 343-4470 or to make an anonymous tip by texting the word 'TIP' to CRIME (27463).
This is a developing story.
