'Lucky Star' Resumes Service Following Shutdown Over Safety Violations

Company says it spent over $1M to meet federal standards (Published Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014)

BOSTON (AP) - A Boston-based discount bus service to New York City is resuming five months after it was shut down by federal transportation officials because of safety violations.
Lucky Star was scheduled to resume service Friday morning.
Lucky Star was shut down by the U.S. Department of Transportation in June after investigators said the company's buses did not meet minimum safety standards and that the company failed to properly inspect, repair or maintain the vehicles. Drivers also weren't required to pass drug and alcohol tests.
According to the order shutting down the company, it once dispatched a bus with a 4-foot-by-2-foot hole in the bottom and significant frame damage.
The company tells The Boston Globe it has spent more than $1 million to upgrade its fleet and comply with federal standards.
