7-Year-Old Who Drowned at Boston Beach Laid to Rest

Kyzr Willis wandered away from the Curley Community Center last week

Family and friends said their final goodbyes Thursday to a 7-year-old boy who wandered away from a Boston summer program and drowned at a nearby beach.

Kyzr Willis wandered away from the Curley Community Center last week.

Community members took part in a massive search that was launched, and hours later, Willis' body was found in the waters off Carson Beach.

During Thursday's service, the Mornign Star Baptist Church in Mattapan was filled with both grief for the boy's loss and praise for the changes the city has made to all its drop-in programs.

Willis' disappearance from the community center prompted a major overhaul on policy there.  The changes include head counts throughout the day and more staff members to oversee the children. Additionally, 34 security cameras have been installed.

During his wake Wednesday, family members wore colors associated with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Willis' favorite cartoon.

While they are glad changes have been made, the boy's family is calling for a more detailed investigation needs to be done.

"I'm so angry about my grandbaby," said his grandfather, Ralph Jackson. "There's no replacing him. He was an angel, he really was."
