A case of MRSA has been reported at a Massachusetts high school, town and school officials announced Monday evening.

In a statement, Arlington school district Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said precautions have been taken after the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus case was reported at Arlington High School.

Officials say it has affected a member of a varsity athletic team, and that the MRSA case appears to be confined for now. The student's current condition is unclear, but the student is being treated, according to officials.

"The close proximity and interactions in locker rooms and sports teams can often spread infections," Arlington High School Principal Matthew Janger said in a letter that was sent to students' families. "We have recently had an isolated case of MRSA reported and wanted to alert the community, both for our own precautions and to recommend precautions to parents/families."

While school officials are saying everything is under control, many parents are obviously concerned.

"What if other kids came down with it? MRSA is hard to stop. Sure, people are going to be scared or concerned.," said parent Kevin Koch.

A deep cleaning with a bleach solution and antibacterial cleansers will take place, and affected athletic facilities will be closed until it's completed, according to health and school officials.

MRSA is a type of bacteria resistant to antibiotics often used to treat staph infections, according to the CDC. Health officials recommend that washing your hands is the best way to prevent the disease, along with never sharing personal care items, including towels.
