Sex Offender Charged in Sexual Assault of Elderly Woman in Hingham, Massachusetts

Donald J. Galvin is facing numerous charges in connection with the break-in and assault

After nearly two weeks on the run, a Level 3 Registered Sex Offender has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of an elderly woman in Hingham, Massachusetts.

Hingham Police said 65-year-old Donald J. Galvin of Boston is charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to rape (subsequent offense), two counts of indecent assault and battery, assault and battery on a person over 60 and breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony.

He was ordered held without bail on Tuesday in Hingham District Court pending the outcome of a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Aug. 11. Prosecutors argued that he should be held because of the violent nature of the crime and his record of convictions.

Galvin was arrested on Monday night. A sketch had been released in the days following the assault depicting a suspect. Police said they identified Galvin as a suspect based on DNA evidence and a strong physical description.

Police said he allegedly broke into the woman's home around 9 p.m. on July 28 by forcing open a window on the ground floor. After assaulting her, he fled the scene on foot.

Authorities say the victim did not know Galvin, but that he started watching her shop at a local grocery store days before the attack.

The victim was treated and released from a hospital. Her family is asking for privacy as they try to help her recover from this ordeal.
