Know This Man? Mass. Supreme Judicial Court Needs Help Identifying Man in Oil Painting

Recognize this man? The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court needs help identifying a portrait of an unknown judge.

A spokesperson for the Bay State's highest court said the oil painting of the justice, who may have sat on the bench between 1780 and 1820, has been unknown ever since all of the portraits of retired justices were hung back up in the John Adams Courthouse starting in 2005.

Chief Justice Ralph Gants came up with the idea to crowdsource the identity of the unknown justice.

Anyone who knows the identity of the man in the portrait, and can provide authentication of the identity, is asked to contact the SJC.

The person who provides the identity will be invited to the courthouse to stand with Gants during a ceremony in which he places a plaque with the justice's name to the painting's frame.
