An investigation is underway after smoke filled an Orange Line train and created panic at Back Bay Station Wednesday evening.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the smoke may have been caused by a propulsion issue.
Passengers kicked out windows when they couldn’t open the doors to escape the smoke. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority says the doors did not malfunction, the motorman was manually opening each train door since part of the train was not in the station.
There is no word yet on why passengers couldn’t hear an announcement from the driver on the situation.
Firefighters evacuated the station and three people were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
The Orange Line northbound is also experiencing unrelated delays Thursday morning from Back Bay to North Station because of a disabled train at Tufts Medical Center.
