Pedestrian Hit and Killed in Weymouth Was Campaigning for Josh Zakim

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle Friday on a Massachusetts bridge while campaigning for secretary of state candidate Josh Zakim.

Police and fire officials in Weymouth responded to the crash on the Route 3 overpass.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office confirmed shortly before 6:30 p.m. that the victim, an elderly man, had died.

The victim has not been publicly identified, but the campaign for Zakim confirms he was a volunteer.

"The Zakim campaign family is absolutely devastated by the sudden loss of a friend and campaign volunteer while he was out with other volunteers today in Weymouth," Zakim said in a statement. "I have spoken with his wife and offered my condolences and the prayers and assistance of our entire team."

Zakim adds that all campaign activities for Friday night were cancelled. He faces incumbent Secretary of State William Galvin in a primary election Tuesday.

The driver remained on the scene, according to the DA's office.

Authorities say the incident is under investigation.
