Police Captain Seeks $1.2M in Discrimination Suit

Capt. Karen Guilbeault sued the city, Mayor Allan Fung, a retired police chief and other former police officials in 2013

A Cranston, Rhode Island, police captain who filed a lawsuit against the city and others alleging sexual harassment and gender discrimination has offered to settle her claims for $1.2 million.

Capt. Karen Guilbeault sued the city, Mayor Allan Fung, a retired police chief and other former police officials in 2013.

The suit claimed Guilbeault, a lieutenant at the time, was denied a paid medical leave of absence and that her promotion was improperly delayed. The defendants have since denied the allegations.

The Providence Journal reports Guilbeault is asking for damages for what she considers lost earnings and benefits.

Robert Coupe, Fung's director of administration, says there hasn't been anything on the record to substantiate the settlement demand. He says they are prepared to go to trial if a resolution isn't reached.
