Red Sox Ace Chris Sale Headed Back to Disabled List

The Boston Red Sox announced on Saturday that starting pitcher Chris Sale has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 15, with mild left shoulder inflammation.

It's the second trip to the DL for Sale in less than a month; he also went on the 10-day DL on July 31 due to inflammation in his same left shoulder. He returned to the team to make one start on Aug. 12 vs. the Baltimore Orioles, where he pitched five shutout innings and gave up just one hit while striking out 12 in a 4-1 Red Sox win.

For the season, Sale is 12-4 with an American League-best 1.97 earned run average. He's tied for the league lead in strikeouts, with 219, over 146 innings of work. The 29-year-old is among the favorites for the AL Cy Young Award.

Boston owns baseball's best record at 87-36 and are 10.5 games up on the New York Yankees in the AL East.
