    Recreational Marijuana Arrives in Massachusetts

On a historic Tuesday in Massachusetts, the East Coast's first two recreational pot shops opened to customers.

Customers who headed to Massachusetts' two commercial pot shops spent nearly $2.6 million during the second week of recreational marijuana sales, according to a report obtained by the Boston Globe.

The paper reported the data was obtained from the state's Cannabis Control Commission and showed the total number of units sold was 65,196, with an average price per unit of $39.68.

Since Cultivate in Leicester and New England Treatment Access in Northampton opened on Nov. 20, the Cannabis Commission reported the biggest day so far in terms of sales was Nov. 23 — Black Friday — with nearly $480,000 spent.

Adults over the age of 21 can purchase products from the two shops if they have a valid ID. Customers can purchase one ounce of marijuana from licensed stores but no more than five grams of pot in concentrated form could be sold.

Massachusetts voters chose to legalize recreational use of marijuana in 2016, but it has taken officials more than two years to determine where the first stores could open. Originally, retail sales were expected to begin July 1.

A third store in Wareham near Cape Cod could open soon after it was issued a final license. The first Boston store is expected to open sometime in early 2019, according to Mayor Marty Walsh.

Recreational marijuana sales are currently legal in six states, and Maine is expected to start legal sales in 2019. Adults can use marijuana in Vermont and Washington, D.C., but there are currently no legal sales in either place.
