An assistant county attorney in New Hampshire has resigned following his arrest on a drunk driving charge over the weekend.

Alexander Gatzoulis resigned from his position at the Rockingham County attorney's office on Sunday after he was arrested by Manchester police overnight Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated.

"When a prosecutor is arrested for any criminal offense, the public's level of trust is diminished in the prosecutor's ability to make tough judgement calls in the office and in the courtroom," the Rockingham County attorney's office said in a statement Monday morning.

Manchester police say Gatzoulis, 36, crashed his Cadillac CTS into the rear of a parked Toyota Camry near the intersection of Lowell and Ashland streets just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

No one was injured in the crash.

Gatzoulis, a Manchester resident, refused to participate in a field sobriety test when officers believed that he was drunk, and was then placed into custody.

He refused to participate in additional testing while at the police department and was released to a sober person.

Gatzoulis is due in court on Dec. 14. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
