Trial Begins for Man Charged With Stabbing and Dismembering Brother in Rutland, Massachusetts

The trial is set to begin Monday in the case of a Massachusetts man charged with murder in the stabbing and dismembering of his brother.

The Telegram & Gazette reports an attorney for 68-year-old Michael Dowjat said during a pretrial hearing Tuesday his client acted in self-defense. Prosecutors say the relationship between the brothers had deteriorated after Dowjat was left out of their father's will.

The body of his 59-year-old brother, David Alan, was found inside a 1960s-style bomb shelter beneath his Rutland home in June 2014.

Prosecutors say Alan was stabbed more than 70 times, and his head, arms, and legs were severed.
