Suspects in Deadly Home Invasion Arrested in Virginia

Suspects have been identified as 23-year-old Joshua Hart, 27-year-old Brittany Smith

Two people wanted in connection with a home invasion and murder in Massachusetts last week have been arrested in Virginia.

Thomas Harty, 95, was killed and his wife Joanna Fisher, 77, was seriously injured in the home invasion at their residence on East River Street in Orange on Wednesday night. Fisher was recovering at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

Authorities said they believed the suspects, identified as 23-year-old Joshua Hart and 27-year-old Brittany Smith, stole the victims' car after the home invasion.

Massachusetts State Police say Hart and Smith were taken into custody by the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Department in Virginia on larceny and stolen property charges Sunday and are being held without bail. It's unclear if they have attorneys.

Both suspects face numerous charges, including murder, attempted murder, home invasion, armed robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

Both will be arraigned as fugitives from justice Tuesday and could return to Massachusetts as soon as Thursday.

The stolen vehicle was recovered in a different location in Virginia, according to state police.

Police said they will release additional details at a later time.
