A man who was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in Hyannis, Massachusetts, has been identified and the manner of his death has been ruled a homicide, prosecutor said Friday.

An autopsy performed Friday revealed 33-year-old Darrell Russ, of Hyannis, died as a result of three gunshot wounds, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office.

Police had initially said the incident was a stabbing, but prosecutors said Friday it was a shooting. It wasn't immediately clear what the discrepency was.

Officers had responded to a physical altercation 362 Yarmouth Rd. in Hyannis, where Russ was found lying on the ground about 1:16 p.m., police said. Russ was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Officers searched for evidence late into the night Wednesday at a strip of businesses.

The suspect had taken off and SWAT teams were called in for a search.

"We really didn't know what was going on," neighbor Cheryl Freeman said at the time. "We didn't hear too many details."
