Woman Killed in Springfield Highway Crash Sunday

A 69-year-old woman died early Sunday morning when she lost control of her car on an off ramp from Route 291 leading to the Massachusetts Turnpike in Springfield.

Police said the fatal accident occurred at about 1 a.m. as the woman, who police have yet to identify, was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus when it struck a concrete barrier on the passenger side. The Taurus spun out and struck a second concrete barrier on Route 91 Southbound. The woman was ejected from the vehicle, police said.

Rescue workers and police responded to the scene but were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police news statement.

"Route 91 Southbound was closed at Exit 7 as well as the ramp from Route 291 for approximately 1 ½ hours," police said.

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and Hampden District Attorney’s Office are leading the investigation.
