(NECN: Marnie MacLean) - A day after making a vulgar comment about a state senator that got national attention, Maine's outspoken governor offered an apology.
Governor Paul LePage told reporters on Thursday that "Senator (Troy) Jackson claims to be for the people, but he's the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline."
The governor said he knew it wasn't politically correct but he was frustrated by Jackson and other lawmakers who have delivered a budget with tax hikes. Governor LePage has vowed to veto the budget and lawmakers are trying to get enough votes to override that veto.
The crass remark prompted calls for an apology from both sides of the aisle.
On Friday, Governor LePage did offer that apology, saying quote, "If I offended anyone with my comment my sincere apology, it was not meant to offend, it was meant to wake the people of Maine up."
When asked whether he was worried his comment could hurt his chances for re-election the Governor said he may not run, he may run for Congress instead.
Rep. Mike Michaud is considering a gubernatorial bid. Gov. LePage said right now everything is on the table.
