Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has been busy working to make the city a winner in the casino sweepstakes.
On Tuesday, Walsh softened his opposition to a Mohegan Sun casino at Suffolk Downs in Revere, Massachusetts. He sat down to negotiate a deal for Boston to reap the benefits for being a so-called "surrounding community."
Walsh struck a deal the next day. The resort will pay the city $18 million per year. That's if it opens of course.
Bruce Mohl, editor of Commonwealth Magazine, has been following the unfolding casino drama very closely. He recently conducted an in-depth interview with Steve Wynn of Wynn Casinos.
Mohl joined Jim Braude on Broadside to discuss the latest regarding the casino push, among other issues.
Walsh had to strike a deal because the gaming commission left him with no other option. "He had to either strike a deal or be left with getting nothing for the city," said Mohl.
Mohl said Mohegan Sun is portraying itself as the "good neighbor" casino. "They had a good incentive to cut a deal with Boston," said Mohl. Wynn's casinos on the other hand are presenting more of a headache.
