Voters are heading to the polls to choose Rhode Island's next governor after a campaign that broke spending records and will make history no matter the outcome.

Democrat Gina Raimondo and Republican Allan Fung have been locked in a heated race, with Moderate Party candidate Robert Healey running a distant third.

Regardless of who wins on Tuesday, Rhode Island will usher in a first: The state has never elected a woman or an Asian-American governor.

Each candidate brought in big names in the eleventh-hour, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for Fung and first lady Michelle Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for Raimondo.

Candidates spent more than $15.7 million overall in the race to date, including in the primaries.
