Jackie Layer joined NBC 10 Boston and necn in August of 2016.
A southern New Jersey native, she attended Penn State University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Meteorology.
While at Penn State, Jackie took advantage of all the clubs and activities both the Meteorology Department and the university had to offer. She took part in the university's Campus Weather Service and a weekly 15-minute educational weather show called "Weather Or Not," which allowed her to get experience forecasting, anchoring, and creating feature weather stories. She was also a part of Penn State’s Dance MaraTHON, which was a year-long fundraising effort that culminated in a no-sleeping, no sitting, 46-hour dance marathon to spread awareness and to raise money for families that are affected by childhood cancer.
Post-graduation, Jackie had the opportunity to start her career in the Midwest- tracking tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and lake effect snow at WBND (ABC-57) in South Bend, IN. She spent three years in “Michiana” where she forecasted during one of the coldest and snowiest winters that southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana had ever seen. Her first winter in the area, wind chills dropped to 40 below zero, so she knows how to bundle up for a northeast winter.
With South Bend being home to the University of Notre Dame, Jackie was able to host the intermission competitions on-the-ice during Notre Dame Hockey home games. She also was a reporter in 2015 and an anchor in 2016 for Notre Dame Day, a global celebration over a 36-hour broadcast to showcase Notre Dame’s progress and traditions.
Even though she is not quite sure where and when she caught the weather bug, Jackie does give credit to her father, who would never leave the house without checking the local forecast first. She also credits the 1995 nor’easter in Philadelphia and a family trip to Florida back in 2004 that was interrupted by Hurricane Charley.
In her spare time, Jackie enjoys the outdoors, especially running. She ran her first half marathon in Chicago in 2014 and hopes to run another half before she runs a full marathon. She also likes to travel, spend time with family and friends, and staying in shape. She is excited to be back on the east coast and to be able to forecast New England’s extreme weather.
