Hundreds Stranded on Blizzard-whipped Canada Highway

(NECN/WXYZ) - A rescue effort is underway in southwestern Ontario, Canada to remove hundreds of drivers trapped on Highway 402.

At least one person reported being stuck on the freeway for 24 hours.

Heavy snow and zero visibility forced the Canadian government to declare the eastbound 402 in Sarnia a disaster area.

Drivers say the blizzard conditions are like none they've ever seen.

Helicopters are now working to remove about 300 stranded people from their vehicles.
