More Problems on Plum Island?

(NECN) - Another possible setback is affecting people hoping to save their homes on the coast of Plum Island, Mass.

The Gloucester Times reports state officials have sent letters to residents telling them they might have to remove all the rocks they've been dumping on the shoreline and cart them away when winter ends.

People have been piling up rocks to keep the waves away from their homes after several were destroyed or seriously damaged in recent storms.

But the Department of Environmental Protection's commissioner says scientific evidence shows such stone barriers can actually cause greater erosion because they reflect wave energy.
