Uganda President Signs New Anti-Gay Bill

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni on Monday signed a new anti-gay bill that would give a life sentence to anyone convicted of having gay sex, with first-time offenders facing 14 years in jail, according to reports reviewed by The Associated Press. Those who promote gay activity or fail to report someone breaking the new law would also face criminal charges. Staunch conservatives who are opposed to homosexuality support Museveni's decision to sign the bill, but the move could alienate Western donors, according to the AP. President Barack Obama warned it would complicate relations with Washington, and called it a "step backward for Ugandans."
