Family, friends and the community came together Friday in Sherborn, Massachusetts, to celebrate the life of a 17-year-old star high school athlete who was killed last week in a boating crash off Cape Cod.
Sadie Mauro — a rising senior and standout lacrosse player at Dover-Sherborn High School — was known for her kindness and her smile. Her school community has been devastated and heartbroken in the wake of her sudden death, after a boat crashed into a jetty off Cold Storage Beach in Dennis last Friday.
A week after the fatal crash, a celebration of life was held for Mauro at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Sherborn at 10 a.m. Friday. Attendees were asked to wear casual summer attire as "Sadie loved this season so much."

Mauro was also remembered in her obituary as a beloved daughter, cherished sister, devoted granddaughter and adored niece.
"To those that knew her, Sadie was a true light, and lived every day in full. Family and laughter, friends and sport, animals, and the outdoors, that was what she loved," her obituary read.
"She was born with a nature and wisdom beyond her years that allowed her to live a full life that felt far longer than her time here. Confident, warm, and empathetic in all she did, and to all she met, our lives will always be better and brighter because of her example."

Leslie Frank of Mass. Elite Lacrosse said Mauro "just had that kind of glow and ease about her."
"Always happy. You felt like she was a personality you could trust anything you had in her care," Frank said in Mauro's obituary.
The principal of Dover-Sherborn High School, John Smith, first announced Sadie Mauro's death in an email to the community last Sunday, saying she had died in a tragic boating accident.
"Our school community is devastated and heartbroken," Smith wrote. "Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit."
"She had such a strong sense of self and had a love for adventure and anything outdoors," he added of Mauro. "A hardworking student and great athlete, Sadie was genuine and effortlessly kind."
Smith also asked everyone to keep Mauro's family in their thoughts and prayers, with Superintendent Beth McCoy adding that Mauro's parents, Jill and Chuck, live in Sherborn with her younger brother, Ian, who is a rising freshman.
