Sony Admits PlayStation Taken Down by Cyberattack

Sony appeared to admit for the first time that the disruption to its Playstation network, which left an untold number of gamers unable to play one another on Christmas, was the result of a cyberattack, NBC News reported. "The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay," a Sony official said in a blog post Saturday. Sony and Microsoft, whose Xbox gaming network was similarly crippled, have declined to say what was behind the outage, but a "denial of service attack" looks to be to blame. The technique is often used by hackers to flood networks with traffic, leading to a server overload. The hacker group called "Lizard Squad" has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack.
