The controversy surrounding the National Football League's response to domestic violence has spilled over to the governor's race in Massachusetts.

Democratic nominee Martha Coakley said Friday that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should resign or be fired and she criticized Republican rival Charlie Baker for not taking the same stance.

During an event with women supporters on Thursday, Baker said Goodell had a lot to answer for over his handling of the crisis. But he stopped short of calling for the commissioner's removal, saying he wanted more data and information.

The league has been rocked by a spate of domestic violence incidents. Goodell was criticized for initially being too lenient in punishing former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. A video that surfaced later showed Rice knocking his then-fiancee unconscious at an Atlantic City casino.
