UMass Lowell Partners with Raytheon

The new program aims to help connect lessons learned in class with real jobs in business and industry

UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan joined NECN to discuss the new collaboration between Raytheon and the university.

The new program aims to help connect lessons learned in class with real jobs in business and industry.

“This gives us an opportunity to leverage Raytheon dollars and develop a collaborative partnership where researchers at Raytheon will actually work with our outstanding faculty and with students to try to generate ideas, innovation,” Meehan explained. “I think it is unique. I think it is a good model. It will help leverage us seeking more federal dollars because increasingly, it’s more difficult and more competitive to get federal research dollars. You need to collaborate with business and industry if you want to be affected and this will help us do that.”

Meehan continued by explaining the benefits this partnership will have from a student perspective.

“Students who interact with business and industry have a higher likelihood of getting a job when they graduate,” Meehan said. “We want what a student learns in the classroom to be applicable in business and industry, and that’s why our students generally get pretty good jobs.”

The former Congressman also talked about his take on the gridlock in Washington. In addition, Meehan explained why being Division One in sports is about more than athletics.
