Three hikers who got stuck on a steep part of the Huntington Ravine Trail in Sargent's Purchase, New Hampshire, were rescued by officials Wednesday evening.

The three hikers, Christopher Barbosa, 27, and Michael Barbosa, 25, of Cranston, Rhode Island, and Eric Silva, 23, of Danielson, Connecticut, called police around 6 p.m., saying they reached a point on the trail where they were not comfortable ascending or descending.

They told police they were novices and not prepared enough for the portion of the trail known as "The Fan." The trail is considered the most difficult trail in the White Mountains, according to officials.

Rescue officials were eventually able to find the hikers around 8:15 p.m., an effort made difficult by spotty cell phone service.

The three hikers had managed to work their way down to a safer area following the call to police. Rescue officials led the three to safety.

The hikers admitted they had no idea how difficult the trail would be. They were carrying three lights, matches, a compass, a map, a knife, food, water, a whistle and extra clothing with them on the hike.
