Auburn, Maine Woman Pleads Guilty to Abandoning Dog and Avoids Jail Time

The dog was found dead three days later after it was struck by a car.

A Maine woman who abandoned her dog outside a Lewiston animal shelter last winter will not serve jail time after admitting to animal cruelty charges.

Sarah Vye reversed course on Monday and changed to plea to guilty in Lewiston District Court. The 22-year-old was given a suspended sentence of 90 days in prison and was ordered to never own an animal again.

Surveillance cameras posted outside the Greater Androscoggin County Humane Society captured the Auburn, Maine woman driving off after leaving her yellow lab mix in front of the shelter after-hours. The dog was found dead three days later after it was struck by a car.

Vye says she's accepting responsibility and the punishment.
