Maine has a new leader of the National Guard.

Douglas Farnham was sworn into office by Gov. Paul LePage on Wednesday, a day after being confirmed by the Maine Senate. He will serve as Maine's adjutant general and commissioner of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management.

Farnham previously served as wing commander of the Maine National Guard 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor. He is a graduate of Brewer High School.

LePage on Friday is scheduled to swear in Paul Mercer as Maine's new commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection.

The Maine Senate on Jan. 2 unanimously confirmed Mercer, who has worked with renewable energy development, solid fuels and biomass energy systems. He earned bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy.
